While Data Rescue 4 is designed for ease of use, you may encounter one of several error codes while using the software. A majority of these errors result from issues with either creating or booting into the BootWell drive. You can find more information about the specific error code you are receiving in the sections below.
Error Code 1:This error code indicates there was an unknown error that occurred when the BootWell drive was pulling files. Typically trying to boot into the Prepare Data Rescue partition again should resolve this error.
Error Code 3:This error code indicates there is an issue with the source drive that is preventing the BootWell drive from accessing it.
If you have another working Mac with no issues you can try creating and booting into the "Prepare Data Rescue" partition on the second Mac. After finishing the creation process, you should confirm the ability to boot from the BootWell drive into the Data Rescue 4 software. That flash drive can then be booted on the Mac you are attempting to recover from, allowing you to proceed with your recovery.
Error Code 4:This error code indicates that files were incorrectly copied or not copied at all to the BootWell drive after you tried to boot into it. This may indicate an issue with the main internal drive.
In this situation, you can try using the Data Rescue 4 software to re-create the BootWell drive. If you have another working Mac with no issues you can try creating and booting into the "Prepare Data Rescue" partition on the second Mac. Error Code 6:This error code indicates the BootWell drive was unable to access your recovery partition. When creating a BootWell, the BootWell must access files from your recovery partition. If you are receiving this code, it is likely that you do not have have a recovery partition or the BootWell is having trouble accessing your recovery partition because your drive is failing.
In this situation, you can attempt to create the BootWell on a second functional Mac that has a recovery partition, or attempt to create a recovery partition on the first Mac. Tech Republic has an article explaining how you can recreate this recovery partition: Creating a Recovery Partition
Error Code 8:This error code indicates that the BootWell was unable to access the main internal boot drive. This is typically a result of a hardware failure with either the drive itself or the enclosure/connection.

Error Code 11:This error code indicates that for some reason in this one instance that BootWell was unable to create the log files. This is typically a result of the drive being too slow (if you aren’t using an official Bootwell drive purchased from Prosoft) or the application timed out.
Typically trying to boot into the Prepare Data Rescue partition again should resolve this issue. If you are attempting to use your own flash drive as a BootWell drive, you may need to try using a faster 3.0 USB flash drive.
